the Dow Jones Average UK [ˌdaʊ ˈdʒəʊnz ˌævərɪdʒ] / US [ˌdaʊ ˈdʒoʊnz ˌævərɪdʒ] or the Dow Jones Index UK / US trademark
business a number that represents an average of the share value of important companies in the US It goes up or down every day according to activity on the stock market, and is used as a sign of how well the US economy is performing. The Dow Jones Average is often simply called the Dow Jones or the Dow.
